Kakinada: Godavari Floods receded on Friday. While the inflows were one lakh cusecs on Thursday night, it fell to 60,000 cusecs by Friday evening.

Irrigation officials said a further fall by 10,000 cusecs was expected by Saturday morning, and that the water was discharged to the canals. However, the Konaseema district officials were alerted about the floods and cyclones.

Konaseema district collector Mahesh Kumar advised officials on Friday to prepare an advance action plan for each mandal to prevent any loss of life and property in the event of the Godavari river floods during the monsoon season.

He said officials should proactively identify and reinforce vulnerable spots such as irrigation canals, drainage channels, tanks and streams that are prone to breaches during floods. Plans have to be in place to identify villages and roads that are likely to be submerged or cut off during the first, second and third stages of the Godavari flood warnings, and evacuate residents to safe locations.

Stocks of rice and essential commodities for three months should be kept ready for the residents in flood-prone villages. NDRF and SDRF teams would arrive in the district for emergency rescue operations. Officials should keep the boats and swimmers ready locally in advance, he said.

The collector directed the officials to continuously monitor the weather conditions for the next five days through the AWARE portal and remain alert accordingly. He advised the electricity department to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Konaseema SP, Rahul Meena, said the police force would remain fully alert during the flood relief operations and provide services in coordination with the revenue department.
