Selections based on a heavy track.
Race 1
3. Castillo King is an interesting first starter that has twice trialled nicely, particularly in his latest run when he strode away in an 818m heat. If he can make use of barrier one and run up to his trials, he should be hard to beat. 6. Eviction Notice will be no easybeat and brings some quality two-year-old form including a second in the Silver Slipper into the race. He’s been gelded and was given a reminder in his recent trial win. 10. Sir Echo looks an improver on whatever he produces on debut, but the way he finished off his recent trial into a close second over 1000m he could be strong late.
How to play it: Castillo King to win.
Race 2
3. Chanterelle kicks off after two trial wins and she took a step forward in the latest of them breaking right away at the finish. She has the speed to put herself in the race and she looks a good chance. 9. Oh Yes She Did showed promise on debut, running fourth in the Gimcrack, but didn’t fire in two starts in the summer. Switched stables and was solid in winning from the front in her July 3 trial. 12. Rocket Girl was favourite on debut in April when he ran third at Hawkesbury in a metro two-year-old event. Caught the eye in her latest trial and bears close watching.
How to play it: Chanterelle to win.
Race 3
3. Claudel is very close to a win if she can get the right run from the wide gate in what will be a smallish field. Runner-up in all three starts so far and was forced to race wide when a game second at Kensington two weeks ago. Should run well. 11. Saloon Passage has had a few chances and just left it a bit too late when a closing second at Hawkesbury third-up. Perhaps the 1400m is in her favour and she’s worth another chance. 4. Clanwilliam is a bit over a month between runs since his handy third at Kensington behind Konsa at this distance. He’s not been far away all prep and has claims again.
How to play it: Claudel to win.
Race 4
Despite a slow start that put him on the back foot, 6. Charleroi finished powerfully to take fifth in a promising return to racing. The mile is his pet trip and if he gets the start right should go close. 4. Champagne Hero should appreciate the rise to the mile after an even run when resuming at 1300m, finishing a couple of lengths off the winner. He should pounce on a spot somewhere on speed and looks a good chance. 8. Tanglewood Jimmy handled the step up to this grade well when a closing fourth three weeks ago at this track and trip. He can be in the finish.
How to play it: Charleroi to win.
Race 5
1. Full Hao was a solid favourite at Canterbury a month ago, but pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia when beaten a couple of lengths. Have to forgive that and the run wasn’t bad at all considering that excuse. Chance to bounce back. 2. Deep Pleasure may well roll forward from the wide gate this time after getting back in the field over 1300m last time out and making some good ground late. She’s untried at the trip but worth respecting. 5. Satono Jasmine brings a couple of very easy provincial wins at the mile into this race and there’s every chance she could go on with the job.
How to play it: Full Hao each way.
Race 6
8. Jarrito comes out of what is looking a handy form race with her close fourth at Rosehill a couple of
weeks ago. Runner-up Benevac won at the weekend and she held her own in that race beaten under a length. Hard to beat. 4. Everido could be a knockout horse fresh, he did win first-up at Canterbury in this grade before his Country Championships campaign. Honest and not without an each-way hope. 10. Capture Me hasn’t raced since an on-pace third at Warwick Farm in early June and gets 4kg of weight relief for rising in class. Has won a trial recently and stays under notice from the wide gate.
How to play it: Jarrito to win.
Race 7
7. Dashing Rupert showed some nice improvement second-up when running on into second at Kensington two weeks ago and looks to land in a good spot behind what may well be a generous tempo. Good chance in an open race. 6. Mamushka appreciated getting back onto a good track when chasing home into second three weeks ago. Takes on all comers this time but draws well and should be around the mark. 10. It’s A Wonder can be a bit hit and miss, but she generally performs fresh and 1400m is suitable. Kicked up late to run second in her latest trial and no surprise if she
shows up.
How to play it: Dashing Rupert each way
