Telangana welfare minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar on Wednesday called on Gurukul students to become custodians of nature as Mission Prakruti awards were presented to schools, teachers and student nature champions at the TGSWREIS headquarters in Masab Tank.
The programme, organised by WWF-India’s Hyderabad office and TGSWREIS, involved 238 institutions, 1,478 nature club members and more than 470 teachers. Organisers said its activities indirectly reached over 1.75 lakh students across Telangana.
“Education must go beyond textbooks. Students should acquire academic knowledge and ecological wisdom,” Kumar said. He asked students to participate in tree plantation, biodiversity conservation, water protection and campaigns against plastic use.
Kumar also cited the state government’s work through HYDRAA to protect lakes, water bodies and natural drainage channels. WWF-India representatives Anil Kumar V. Epur, Vanitha Datla and Farida Tampal said Mission Prakruti had helped students build environmental responsibility through biodiversity registers, citizen science and campus nature clubs statewide.
