Dharwad: An Anesthesiologist was found dead in a pool of blood inside his apartment in Dharwad on Wednesday evening, while his eight-year-old son was discovered with injuries. The child has been admitted to hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Dr Kiran Honnannavar, an anaesthesiologist attached to a private hospital. He lived with his wife, Dr Priyanka, an ophthalmologist, and their son in an apartment in Dharwad.
City Police Commissioner Shashikumar said that Kiran’s family members and friends repeatedly tried to contact him from Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Dr Priyanka who received the phone calls reportedly informed others that he was on duty or had gone outside. The continued lack of communication raised suspicion and relatives came to meet him at home.
“Dr Kiran was found lying in a pool of blood. The child was also found with injuries but was alive and was immediately shifted to hospital for treatment,” the Commissioner who visited the house told reporters.
Police said there was no indication that any outsider had entered the apartment, and investigators are examining what transpired inside the house.
Dr Priyanka, who was at the residence, has been taken into custody for questioning. According to the Commissioner, she is in a state of shock and has not been able to provide a coherent account of the incident. “She is not in a proper frame of mind,” he said.
The members of Dr Kiran’s family have alleged that Dr Priyanka was responsible for the incident. Police said she opened the apartment door when they arrived.
The Police Commissioner learnt about the incident while on his evening walk at around 7 pm and immediately rushed to the apartment. On finding the child still breathing, he arranged for the child to be shifted to hospital without delay.
The child is said to have been suffering from health issues.
A post-mortem examination is under way to determine the exact time and cause of death. CCTV footage from the apartment complex is also being examined as part of the investigation.
Police have registered a murder case and are continuing their investigation to establish the sequence of events.
