The New York Rangers will begin their campaign to return to respectability at home in 2026.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, Igor Shesterkin’s Broadway Blueshirts’ regular season is slated to get underway with a Madison Square Garden showdown against Nikita Kucherov’s Tampa Bay Lightning.

This matchup comes on the heels of a fairly disappointing 2025-26 for Mike Sullivan’s club.
Although the team came into the year with high hopes — the franchise was just one year removed from their 23-24 President’s Trophy — the Rangers never gelled and finished the year 34-39-9, last in the Metropolitan Division below the Islanders and Devils.
To make sure they’re better equipped come fall, General Manager Chris Drury got to work this offseason.
Some of his notable moves include acquiring winger Pavel Dorofeyev from the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights, acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson and trading for Utah Mammoth stars Seaon Durzi and Cole Beaudoin.
They also drafted first-round pick Alberts Šmits (5th overall, Defenseman), and second-rounder Benjamin MacBeath (64th overall, Defenseman).
“We felt like we plugged some holes with not only real players that we can put on our roster that can play in key roles but also added some other picks in actual draft picks and actual prospects,” Drury said.
All of the above join perennial stars and team core Shesterkin, Adam Fox, Mika Zibanejad, Vladislav Gavrikov and Alexis Lafrenière.
In 2025-26, the Rangers played the Lightning three times. They won two of the three matches.
