Celebrity Gogglebox has welcomed singer Jake Shears to the Channel 4 programme
Jake Shears has made his Celebrity Gogglebox debut – but who is his real-life famous ex-boyfriend?
The singer shot to fame as the co-lead vocalist of the 2000s glam-pop band Scissor Sisters, best known for hits like I Don’t Feel Like Dancin, Take Your Mama and Filthy/Gorgeous. After the band’s hiatus, Jake carved out a successful solo career too.
Since then, he’s remained booked and busy and even bagged a spot on the new series of Celebrity Gogglebox alongside Josh Homme.
Away from the sell-out shows and recording studios though, Jake’s love life has often made the headlines, including his past romance with a fellow famous face.
In 2004, Jake started dating American-Lebanese film director and artist Chris Moukarbel. The two were in a long-term relationship for 11 years until their split in 2015.
“I was just absolutely devastated, and it took me two years to get over it. I’ve never been so heartbroken,” Jake previously told PrideSource.
What’s more, while on the Annie Mac Changes podcast in 2023, Jake candidly opened up about the reason for his split from Chris.
Revealing he and Chris were non-monogamous near the end of their romance and were “basically dating other people”, Jake recalled the moment he knew he had to end things.
“It was one of those things where it’s like, he kind of had a boyfriend. I remember I was sitting on the beach with this guy I had a crush on who’s now a very good friend. You know, Chris was off with you know, his guy and I’m sitting on the beach with this guy that I like,” Jake said.
He added: “And he looks at me and he’s like, ‘I’m not going to be your boyfriend’. Like, you’re way too complicated. And it just dawned on me that I wasn’t getting anything that I wanted from anyone, anywhere. Like my life. Just nothing was working.
“You know, I felt like that was- just there was a moment right there. And it just dawned on me that like, okay, I got to make a big change. Like, right now, something. Something’s got to happen. I went home and broke up with Chris.”
Jake also revealed that around the same time of his split he felt like he was losing his identity following Scissor Sisters’ hiatus. He shared: “So, you know, he [Chris] was making documentaries and doing film stuff, and he wanted to go to L.A. So we moved to L.A. together. Didn’t have the band anymore, moved to Los Angeles.”
Host Annie then said: “And suddenly you’re there all the time?” Jake replied: “And I don’t have New York anymore. You know, New New York was such a big part of my identity. The band was such a big part of my identity. And I was losing my relationship at the same time.”
Celebrity Gogglebox airs every Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
