A Maharashtrian family’s joyful reunion turned into tragedy after three generations were wiped out in a road accident on National Highway‑161 near Bachepally village in Sangareddy district early on Tuesday.
The victims, all natives of Degloor in Maharashtra’s Nanded district, were travelling in a SUV to Hyderabad to receive a family member at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) arriving from Oman.
According to police, Mohammed Nadeem, 32, planned to pick up his sister from RGIA on Tuesday night. Since her flight was scheduled to land around 11 pm, the family decided to spend the day sightseeing in Hyderabad before heading to the airport after dinner. They arranged a relative’s SUV, a seven‑seater, in which ten passengers including two children were travelling.
The incident took place around 4.15 am when the vehicle, driven by Nadeem’s brother‑in‑law, lost control and rammed into the highway divider, crossed onto the opposite carriageway, veered onto the service road and overturned.
Mohammed Shameen Begum, 50, her 32‑year‑old son Mohammed Nadeem and his four‑year‑old daughter Mohammed Anabiya Taskeem died on the spot. Begum and her granddaughter died instantly, while Nadeem succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital.
Officials from the motor vehicles department, after inspecting the accident spot, observed long skid marks indicating the SUV was travelling at over 100 kmph. They suspect that overspeeding, coupled with rain, caused the driver to lose control. Authorities also noted that the ageing vehicle’s airbags failed to deploy during the crash.
Police registered a case against the driver, who survived the accident, for rash and negligent driving. Officials said he is now grappling with the trauma of losing close family members even as legal proceedings are initiated against him. The bodies were shifted to Narayankhed Government Hospital for post‑mortem and later handed over to the family.
Later, Sangareddy superintendent of police Paritosh Pankaj inspected the accident site and directed officials to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the exact cause of the crash. He also instructed police to ensure proper medical care for the injured survivor and extend all necessary assistance to the family, while urging motorists to avoid overspeeding, especially during rainy conditions, and undertake long‑distance journeys only after adequate rest.
