She and Diaz accused Hadley of sending the messages and creating Craigslist “rape fantasy” advertisements that encouraged men to attack Connell.
On June 24, 2016, Connell claimed a masked man tried to rape and strangle her. Believing Hadley was behind the attack, police arrested Hadley in July 2016, and she was charged with serious felonies and held on USD 1 million bail. She then spent 88 days in jail, facing the possibility of life imprisonment. While she was jailed, Diaz sold their shared condominium, making things even more complicated.
However, the truth came out as the investigation went on, with police finding that Diaz and Connell had created fake emails and used multiple online accounts and VPNs. They had staged the harassment to make it appear that Hadley was responsible. Authorities concluded the scheme was designed to frame Hadley and pressure her into giving up her rights to the condo.
In January 2017, Hadley was exonerated while Connell was arrested after she pled guilty to multiple felony charges, including fraud, false imprisonment, and filing a false police report. She was sentenced to five years in prison, with investigators finding out that she had previously lied about having cervical cancer and other personal matters.
Diaz was arrested in 2021 and convicted in 2023 of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to ten years and one month in federal prison.
What happened to Angela Connell, Ian Diaz, and Michelle Hadley?
Ian Diaz annulled his marriage to Angela Connell in April 2017, and she later went back to using her maiden name, according to Toxic Love Story. In January 2018, Connell reported to prison but was released to parole supervision in July 2020. She was granted 342 days of pre-sentence credit for time, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Information confirmed to USA TODAY. Connell officially completed her parole on July 19, 2021.
Ian Diaz, on the other hand, served a 10-year prison sentence at FMC Fort Worth, a federal medical facility with a detention centre. He has a release date of January 31, 2031, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. As for Michelle Hadley, she sued the city of Anaheim, Diaz, and Connell after she was released from prison. The city settled for an undisclosed amount in 2021. In a conversation with the media outlet, she said:
“I’m also going to teach her in general what healthy love actually looks like. One of the best things to equip her with is a sense of her own identity, a sense of self-confidence.”
