Tehcno DJ brothers Mathame have released their new tune, Follow, and are promising to never lose the ‘human touch’ after falling in love with music thanks to their parents’ pirate radio
Two brothers taking the techno world by storm have vowed to never stop creating with a human touch after growing fears AI is taking over the music scene. The technology has seen AI-produced content flood streaming platforms with billions of synthetic tracks, but for two Italian siblings, the human touch will always be relevant.
Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli, better known on the music scene as Mathame, confidently told the Mirror that while they will always welcome new tools such as AI, they won’t let it take over their industry. Younger brother Amadeo insists he is able to spot a tune made artificially in “0.1 seconds”, while older sibling Matteo says it’s obvious as there is “no intention, no soul, nothing”.
He claims the human “intention” on a track makes all the difference. “We are humans making art for other humans,” Amadeo tells us.
“So at the end, at the base of everything, there’s the intention to make people feel. A machine can’t understand that feeling.
“You feel it with everything, you feel it with music, you feel it with image, you feel it with a piece of paper, an article, and everything. A machine doesn’t understand the emotion, you know, the feeling, how to really craft the words.”
And it’s that emotion the pair have put into their latest track, Follow, in collaboration with Swedish star Bonn. It comes after their success earlier in the year with Endless.
Speaking proudly of their new record, Matteo admits it first began to form three years ago while the brothers were jamming in Ibiza. “We started with some chords, very simple, and we loved that,” he said.
“The genesis of Follow was really simple to be honest. It was not complicated, like it was really just a chord, another producer jamming on it, and then we said, ‘Okay, let’s put a real vocal on it, like a strong one,’ and Bonn came on board.”
The brothers, who have a 12-year age gap, admit the process was a lot simpler than most tracks, saying they actually finished it last June.
“It was just instant, to be honest,” Amadeo said of it’s formulation. And Matteo admitted usually they are a tricky duo to work with because they are so “picky”.
“Sometimes you need to work around an idea for a long time and test it, and see the reaction on the dance floor,” he says. “But this time it was like an instant crush.
“You fall in love instantly with what we had. There’s no double-thinking, because often when you have an idea, you double-think how this idea could be better. This time, this time didn’t happen.”
The pair’s love of music stems from their parents’ pirate radio station. While Matteo wasn’t born when it was running, Amadeo says the station, Radio Taxi, played a big part in his childhood.
“Their music was more around indie rock at the time,” he says. “You know, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Clash. And I got inspired by all this kind of music at home, and growing up it was like a natural approach, very natural.”
Matteo jumps in: “I think that from all this, I got like the pirate attitude, you know? Like, you do your things in your own way, and don’t wait for permission or something.”
And it’s that mentality that both brothers intend to continue to take with them as they strive for bigger and better. They insist there is a lot more to come from them as they get set to continue their release of music and set up huge events across the globe.
