On the 15th anniversary of Amy Winehouse’s death, the singer’s mum has opened up about why she thinks her daughter suffered from alcohol addiction, calling her a ‘victim of her own success’
Amy Winehouse‘s mother has said her daughter ended up being the “the victim of her own success” as she marks 15 years since her tragic death.
Back to Black singer Amy died on 23 July, 2011. She was found dead at her home in London with a toxicology report later ruling the death as accidental alcohol poisoning. The 27-year-old had struggled with addiction for years and her blood alcohol level at the time of her death was more than five times the legal drink-driving limit.
15 years on, Janis Winehouse, 72, said that she thought Amy’s huge rise to fame ended up being her downfall as she used alcohol to cope with her unusual lifestyle.
She told the i Paper : “She didn’t want [fame], but it just followed her. And she’d be like ‘Who me?’ She didn’t have confidence. Hence the alcohol. I think it’s the same with many, many addicts with alcohol. The alcohol takes away the pain and that is a horrible thing with addiction.”
Janis said that addiction becomes the “only boss” and said people “don’t get” how it can make your body think you “need it”. Amy’s mother also shared how she was coping with her daughter’s death after over a decade. She said that she was simply trying to “get on with life”.
Earlier this month, Janis and the rest of Amy’s family hosted a tribute event to her at Camden Market, where fans could pay their respects to the late singer.
Amy’s friend and bassist Dale Davis, who the singer once described as her “favourite person to go anywhere wit”, previously told the Mirror about speaking to her the night before she died. “I spoke to her three hours before she went to bed,” he shared.
“She called me at 11:30 at night, and we’re having a chat for about 15 minutes, and I said I was going to see her tomorrow and she said, ‘Okay’. And I said ‘Love you’. She said ‘love you’ and put the phone down. And that was the last thing I heard.”
He revealed the following day he was working with Will Young when he started to get a “barrage of texts”. “I didn’t understand what was going on,” Dale said. “I was starting to get agitated at that point as I was playing still. The musical director then came over and said, Amy’s passed. They’d known for about half an hour, and I just slumped back on my chair and said I was supposed to see her tonight.”
Since Amy’s death, the Amy Winehouse Foundation set up Amy’s Place, a recovery house in East London for women battling drug and alcohol addiction. The charity celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.
