Johnny Depp has only been in one live-action film role since his defamation case against Amber Heard concluded in 2022, but now he is set to take on the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge. At a Comic-Con appearance promoting his new Paramount film, he appeared as the villain from Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.
The film, Ebenezer, has been described as a dark fantasy version of Scrooge, a bitter miser who despises Christmas and must change his ways to avoid a terrible fate in the afterlife.
Depp was seen with bushy and unkempt grey eyebrows and mutton chops, and looks to be wearing facial prosthetics that age the 63-year-old up. Scrooge’s signature top hat, a scarf and long black coat were also seen.
Depp has stayed away from the film industry in the past four years. In 2022, Depp sued his former partner Amber Heard over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post about her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse, which his lawyers said falsely accused him of being an abuser.
It followed a ruling by the High Court in London in 2020 that found he assaulted Heard and left her in “fear for her life”.
Ebenezer is due for release in November this year. The trailer provides a glimpse at the cast including Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley, as well as Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Oscar-nominated actress Andrea Riseborough and Lord Of The Rings star Sir Ian McKellen.
