LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are now teammates in Philadelphia, but their new partnership comes with one uncomfortable piece of family history.
James agreed to join the 76ers on Friday, teaming up with Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey for what could be the final title chase of his career. Brown immediately celebrated the signing on social media, posting, “#throwtheballup.”
Before they throw it up, however, the two stars may need to clear the air over Bronny James.
Asked about his relationship with Brown following a Lakers-Celtics game earlier this year, LeBron described it as respectful — with one notable exception.
“Besides the s— he said about Bronny at Summer League,” James said. “Other than that, we’ve been alright.”
The comment referred to a viral clip from the 2024 Las Vegas Summer League. While sitting courtside with Angel Reese and Kysre Gondrezick to a viral clip from the 2024rezick, Brown appeared to say, “I don’t think Bronny is a pro.”
Brown later addressed the moment on X without directly confirming the interpretation.
“It’s a flex to have your son alongside you in the NBA,” he wrote. “Bronny has all the tools around him to be successful. I look forward to watching his growth.”
LeBron suggested he had accepted that explanation, joking that the two would “be alright.” He also acknowledged that Bronny still had plenty of development ahead of him.
The awkwardness did not prevent James from praising Brown’s game. He argued that the former Celtics star deserved greater MVP consideration after carrying Boston through a season of major roster turnover.
Brown responded by calling James’ praise an honor.
Now the relationship moves from respectful rivals to a partnership with championship aspirations.
Philadelphia acquired Brown before James’ arrival, and his presence helped make the 76ers a legitimate destination. Brown was also among the players who reportedly communicated with James during free agency.
After LeBron publicly revealed that he had not forgotten the Bronny remark nearly two years later, their first shared locker room will come with a subject neither can pretend never existed.
The City of Brotherly Love may be getting an early test of the name.
