David Jonsson has been making headlines after he was announced as the new ‘Black Panther’ in Black Panther 3. After director Ryan Coogler updated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) head Kevin Feige on his casting decision. The latter explained to IGN that the studio had officially been looking for an actor to play the son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s character, ‘T’Challa’, when Ryan got in touch with him. He revealed that The Sinners director had his own “secret meeting” with David Jonsson and brought the idea of casting him to the studio.
Talking to Empire, Kevin Feige explained that they hadn’t been looking to cast the role as Ryan Coogler was busy filming The Sinners. And everyone was well aware that the director would have completely immersed himself in the project, leading them to think that they would sit with Ryan after the Academy campaign. He stated:
“We hadn’t started a search yet. Ryan was working on Sinners, and when Ryan works on a project, he’s all in. So the presumption very much was we would sit with him after Sinners came out, after the Academy campaign. We were waiting ’til after the Academy Awards to sit with Ryan and begin that process.”
In the same conversation, Kevin Feige revealed that it was around a month and a half ago when Ryan Coogler contacted him and informed him about his decision. He was quoted as saying:
“A month and a half or so before that process, he called me and said, ‘I found him.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He goes, ‘I found him. He’s this guy, David Jonsson.’ He mentioned his movies. I had seen some of them. I watched more. He goes, ‘I’m going to meet him.'”
