TikTok star Rebecca Luna – who documented her battle with the condition – has died at the age of 49 after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s

TikTok star Rebecca Luna has died at the age of 49 after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s.

Rebecca, who was based in British Columbia and had over 47,000 followers before her death, turned to Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) after her decline “coming faster than I hoped” and sadly died this weekend.

A statement issued online by her eldest daughter Maya read: “Rebecca passed away July 25th at approximately 1.15 pm surrounded by her loved ones. Thank you for your support and privacy.”

Rebecca had shared her decision to end her life a few days ago in an emotional post online. She explained: “It’s a hard decision to make, because I’m living in a body that doesn’t feel comfortable, safe, good, nothing.

“It feels terrible. This is when I get to prioritise myself, and I haven’t done that my whole life. I’ve suffered enough in this world. But at the same time, the suffering has brought me to this place of ‘I really know who I am and I really know that I have a good f**king heart.'”

She added: “I hope if I leave this planet that’s the only thing I teach – and that’s the only thing that somebody gets something out of – is that you just need to act your way into loving yourself. If I can do it, you can do it too.”

Rebecca was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s last year. She was a single mum and in her final days had been raising money for her family and had launched a GoFundMe to support them.

“My lovely followers suggested I do a go fund me for the end of life expenses so I don’t leave my loved ones behind with that responsibility on top of their own grief. All blessings and well wishes are warmly appreciated and I love you all. I couldn’t have come this far without you,” she wrote.

After being diagnosed, she turned to social media to support others going through a similar thing. She documented her doctors appointments, the challenges she faced and her plan to turn to MAID, which is Canada’s medical assistance in dying programme. She became an advocate for others who were going through similar.

Luna hit the headlines when she revealed one of her bucket list moments was to meet Lily Allen. She was invited by the singer to one of her concerts, something which she later described as one of the happiest moments of her life.
