Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia, “a saint” after she was shot during an incident at their home in Ashburn, Va. on Sunday.
“Our hearts to go out to Eric Bieniemy. … Mia is stable, which is a plus,” Reid said after Monday’s practice at Missouri Western State’s campus for training camp, per ESPN.
“… We all love EB and you hate seeing those things happens. … Real life. You take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.”
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia, was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office.
He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Deputies found 57-year-old Mia with multiple gunshot wounds when they responded to a shooting at the home, The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office said.
Eric — who was with the Chiefs at their practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier Sunday — was not present for Monday’s workout.
The Chiefs said they are aware of the incident.
“Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the team told the Associated Press in a statement.
The Chiefs brought back Bieniemy as offensive coordinator in January after three years away from the team.
Bieniemy, who served as the running backs coach for the 2025 season, following stints with UCLA (2024) and the Commanders (2023), previously spent 10 seasons working with Reid in Kansas City.
