Ram Kapoor is one of the most loved participants in the reality show, Lock Upp season 2. Every episode brings the actor into the limelight, and something similar happened recently. In an episode, Ram was seen getting emotional as he spoke about helping his father, Anil ‘Billy’ Kapoor, pass away peacefully. Ram’s emotional confession left everyone in tears.
What led to Ram Kapoor’s strained relationship with his father, Anil Kapoor?
While everyone knows about Ram Kapoor, not many people are aware that he is the son of veteran ad guru Anil Kapoor, popularly known as ‘Billy Kapoor’ in the advertising world. Billy Kapoor was a business honcho and wanted Ram to take over his legacy. But Ram was never interested in doing business and wanted to be an actor.
Ram moved to America to pursue a course in acting, a move Billy never liked. As a result, the father and son had severed their ties. Billy completely cut him off from the family and even stopped giving any financial support to him. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Ram Kapoor spoke about his strained relationship with his dad and said:
“For him, his company was his legacy and everything, and he wanted his only son to take it forward. So, when I said I didn’t want to take over his company, I understood what he must have gone through. I was in America on my own, making money for food and rent. I worked at Starbucks, sold second-hand vehicles, etc. But had that not happened, I wouldn’t have been the man I am today.”

In the same conversation, Ram revealed that he wanted to prove to his father that he can achieve success on his own. Even after coming back to India, he struggled. For 10 years, the father-son duo didn’t speak to each other. However, when his father’s employees started approaching him for photographs with the actor, Anil realised his son’s popularity.
Ram Kapoor revealed how he helped his father pass away
It was in 2021 when Billy Kapoor passed away after giving a tough fight to cancer. In the recent episode of Lock Upp 2, Ram Kapoor spoke about his father’s death and revealed that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 63 and underwent 18 sessions of chemotherapy. Billy’s cancer was cured, and he went on to lead a normal life.
However, Billy’s cancer relapsed during COVID, and he called Gautami Kapoor and told her that he wanted to speak to Ram. When Ram took his call, Billy told him that he didn’t want to fight the cancer anymore and instead wished to die peacefully. He asked for Ram’s help in doing so, asking him, “Can you help me die?” Like any dutiful son, Ram was against it but Billy somehow convinced him.

The actor revealed that his father made him promise not to tell anyone about his decision and asked him not to leave him alone in the ICU. Ram also revealed that there was no treatment going on in the ICU and only he knew about it. Recalling the heart-wrenching phase of his life, Ram shared:
“Somehow he knew that Ram could do this. He was scared of being alone, but he wasn’t scared of dying. He said, ‘I don’t want anyone to cry at my funeral. If I die, I want you to cremate me the very same day.’ Somehow, I held his hand, and every day I helped him go. My mother and my sister still don’t talk to me. It’s been more than five years. But I think it’s one of the best things a child can do for their parents.”
