When the PGA Tour descended upon the Travelers Championship in June to announce major changes to the future of professional golf, at least some in the golf world rolled their eyes.
The changes as outlined by the Tour had been in the works for months … and expected by many inside the sport’s orbit for roughly as long. The real excitement wasn’t going to be laid out in a carefully choreographed press conference, it was going to be scrapped, clawed and cudgeled over in the back rooms and board meetings where golf’s business really gets done. In other words, it was going to be up to the sponsors.
The thing that everybody wanted to know then — the one that would separate the new PGA Tour from the old one — wasn’t a “Championship Series” or a matchplay finale, it was where those events would take place … and who would pay for them.
On Tuesday, we earned perhaps our clearest glimpse yet into how that vision will look, as the PGA Tour announced a new sponsor for an old event: Sompo, a Japanese insurance company with North American headquarters in the New York area; and the ProCore Championship, a longtime Tour event hosted in Napa, Calif.
According to a Tour press release announcing the news, the newly minted “Sompo Championship” will return to Napa as a full-field event in the last week of July 2027 before it is elevated to the Tour’s forthcoming “Championship Series” in 2028 and moved to a new venue. The Sompo will replace the previously named ProCore Championship, which was dropped from the 2026 schedule after ProCore elected not to renew its title sponsorship. More than that, though, it will fill the second of 15 regular season spots available in the PGA Tour’s newly minted, high-prize-money, 130-player “Championship Series” — the top-billing of events expected to define the Tour’s future.
This news matters on a basic level because it is an accounting of the Tour and its future obligations and events, but it matters on a much deeper level because it reflects the first major domino in pro golf’s high-stakes game of musical chairs. This is where the real intrigue exists in the future of the PGA Tour in late-July 2026: Which events will wind up on the inside of the new “Championship Series,” and which events will be left behind?
The truth is that the cake is already much more baked than it seems. Of the “23 to 24” events expected under the new “Championship Series,” more than a third have already been decided: The Sompo, the Travelers Championship, the four majors, the Players and the Tour Championship. Of the “open” slots, common sense dictates the Tour will choose at least a few of its favorite events.
The Genesis Invitational, for example, is a tournament with more than 50 years of history held at a world-class golf course in a major metropolitan area that regularly features all of the best players in the sport. Check. The Pebble Beach Pro-Am is another winner: great golf course, great field, great history, great market. Check. On Super Bowl weekend, the WM Phoenix Open has become a bona fide Super Bowl unto itself — welcoming what feels like half a billion people to the biggest party in the sport. Check. Arnie’s place is Arnie’s place. Check. Jack’s place is Jack’s place. Check again.
This means that there are fewer opportunities for the outstanding events to make a case for inclusion in the Championship Series schedule. And, if you take the Tour’s word for it around the time of that initial announcement, there has also been no shortage of interest from sponsors eager to hitch their wagon (and marketing budgets) to the Tour’s new future in the form of events that might not even currently exist.
For the Tour, the hope is that the new series will transform professional golf as we know it: creating a new, highly competitive Tour that makes more sense to casual fans, features fewer handouts, makes for more compelling television and trades in the biggest media markets in the sport. Of course, the goal of it all is not high-minded improvement but a much simpler form of accounting. If these goals are successful, the Tour could stand to bring in more money from eager TV partners during its next round of rights agreements, and those agreements could command even hungrier sponsor commitments. In this world, the business of golf could not just hold steady on its Saudi sugar high of the early 2020s — it could continue to expand.
But those changes are still a long way off. The new schedule won’t take effect until 2028, and the Tour is reportedly hoping to have the full “new” schedule in place for January 2027, leaving a full lame-duck year for the Tour in its current form. We won’t know if the new format works until well after it has already begun, but eagle-eyed viewers will see the picture come into shape long before the first event tees off.
That picture gained some clarity on Tuesday morning, and interestingly enough, it starts in wine country.
