Throwback: When Suneil Anand Spoke About Carrying Forward Dev Anands Legacy

Dev Anand’s son, Suneil Anand, passed away at the age of 70 following a heart attack. He reportedly suffered the attack during a stopover in London while travelling from the US to India. In a poignant coincidence, he passed away at the same hospital where his father, legendary actor Dev Anand, breathed his last in 2011.
Nearly three years ago, on Dev Anand’s 100th birth anniversary, Suneil fondly remembered his father in an interview with Filmfare.

Speaking to us at the time, Suneil had said, “I feel he is still with us, with me. He is a source of inspiration for millions of youth the world over even now. He continues to live as the evergreen romantic star.”

Apart from being an actor, Suneil was also a filmmaker. During the interview, he had revealed that he was working on a film dedicated to his father and his enduring legacy. He had shared, “It’s a huge movie dedicated to my father. I am producing and directing. The show goes on. I will continue to take my father’s legacy forward.”

Dev Anand, alongside Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, was one of the defining stars of Hindi cinema. He became known for his effortless charm, impeccable style and distinctive screen presence. His philosophy towards life was beautifully captured in Sahir Ludhianvi’s iconic song Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya, har fikar ko dhuen mein udata chala gaya from the 1961 classic Hum Dono.

Remembering the man behind the legend, Suneil had described his father as someone who deeply understood his responsibility towards his audience.

“He was also a well-read man, well-informed. He could converse on any topic with anyone in any crowd. He was as at ease with the man on the street as he was with royalty. He was very humble. It is difficult to be humble when you are such a big star,” Suneil had added. “He was the best of both worlds,” Suneil had said.

Suneil had also spoken about Dev Anand’s dedication to maintaining his image, explaining that the veteran actor believed it was every performer’s responsibility to present themselves well, both on and off screen.
According to Suneil, Dev Anand practised yoga and exercised regularly to stay fit.

“I was a witness to all of that. He was a very stylish man. He was forever creating, developing and working on his looks and that contributed a lot to his evergreen romantic hero image. He set many trends where people were imitating him, copying him all over the world and they still do,” he had added.

Suneil had also reflected on the four decades he spent by his father’s side, managing his schedule, looking after his well-being and overseeing Navketan Films. He recalled coordinating the screening of Guide at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, calling it a proud milestone for Dev Anand, their family, Navketan and Indian cinema, as it became the first Indian classic to be selected by the Cannes committee for a special screening.

Suneil Anand made his acting debut in 1984 with Anand Aur Anand, directed by Dev Anand. He later appeared in films such as Car Thief, Main Tere Liye and Master. Dev Anand and his wife, Kalpana Kartik, had two children, Suneil and their daughter, Devina.
