The Padres are doing their homework on one of the Yankees’ top young prospects ahead of the trade deadline.
San Diego has shown interest in shortstop Dax Kilby, the Yankees’ 2025 first-round pick, according to The Post’s Joel Sherman.
The Padres recently asked the Yankees where Kilby would be playing after the 19-year-old was promoted from the Florida Complex League to Low-A Tampa, per Sherman.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have had a scout monitoring the Padres, he added.
San Diego was among the teams most interested in Kilby during last year’s MLB draft before the Yankees selected him with the No. 39 overall pick.
Kilby impressed as an 18-year-old in the Florida State League last season but missed most of this year because of a hamstring injury before recently returning to action.
In 104 total minor league plate appearances over the last two seasons, Kilby is hitting .318/.423/.432 with six extra-base hits (one home run) and 16 stolen bases.
The teams’ extensive scouting comes as the Yankees search for upgrades ahead of next week’s trade deadline.
A deal with the Padres would likely center around star closer Mason Miller, who has allowed just four earned runs in 43 2/3 innings this season.
Sherman floated a hypothetical Yankees package that could include Kilby and hard-throwing pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange, along with one pitcher from a group featuring Elmer Rodríguez, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers and one outfielder from among Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones for Miller.
Earlier this month, the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee reported that the franchise was open to dealing Miller, starter Michael King and relief pitcher Adrian Morejon if they opt to sell.
It’s still unclear if the trade-happy A.J. Preller will choose to sell off assets rather than try to make a playoff run.
The Padres are 53-53 and sitting 1.5 games back of a National League Wild Card spot heading into Tuesday’s play.
