For the first time since Terrion Arnold’s arrest, Lions head coach Dan Campbell was able to discuss the situation with his entire team.
Though it was difficult, Campbell said releasing the 2024 first-round pick was essential to the team’s success.
“It stinks. You never want to let go of a player — especially somebody that you’ve been around for a while here and you drafted and all that, and it’s unfortunate,” Campbell said before Wednesday’s practice. “But we made the move we felt was best for us.”
Arnold, who is facing felony charges of armed robbery and kidnapping, turned himself in on June 24, but is currently out on a $1 million bond.
The defensive back is subject to home confinement with the exception of work and legal appointments, meaning he can train with another team if picked up.
The release opens up an interesting position battle for the second cornerback spot next to DJ Reed.
On their current roster, the Lions have Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Rock Ya-Sin, along with veterans such as Khalil Dorsey, Nick Whiteside and Roger McCreary who will fight for the starting spot.
Detroit also spent a fifth-round pick on Arizona State product Keith Abney II in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he could see a larger role than expected now.
“We feel pretty good in that room with the competition and those guys between veterans, young guys and ability,” Campbell said.
Arnold cleared waivers, as expected, and is an unrestricted free agent while he waits for his trial, starting with an arraignment hearing before a judge in Tampa scheduled for Aug. 13.
“From what I know of TA, he’s just a really good dude. Young guy that I have a lot of love and respect for. He’s going through a hard time right now,” Ya-Sin said after Wednesday’s practice. “I don’t know any specifics or anything like that, but I’m definitely gonna miss him.”

According to the 23-year-old’s agent, Nicole Lynn, four teams — the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans — had reached out to Arnold as of July 10.
Lynn said Arnold had worked out with the Texans and had visited throughout July with the other teams listed.
Harvey Steinberg, Arnold’s attorney, said he’s “fairly confident” Arnold will be on another team soon.
