Gemma Atkinson says Gorka Márquez will “shrink in his chair” when his daughter starts talking about certain things. She made the comments as the couple opened up about the joys of parenthood, with Gemma joking that their kids sometimes come out with a “question that blows your mind”.
Gemma met pro dancer Gorka on the set of Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, and they now have two children together, Mia and Thiago. And it seems the kids are growing up quickly.
When asked what she thought the “best thing” about being a parent was, Gemma pointed to the different “phases” of childhood — seeing a “podgy little thing” transform into a little human being.
She told the Lost In Translation podcast: “It’s seeing the different phases that the kids go through for me. It’s the fact that you have a baby, and they’re this little podgy little thing that can’t function at all without you.
“And it looks like they have elastic bands around their little wrists cos of the fat rolls, and you think, ‘Oh, God, bless ’em’, but then that goes. But then you have the little toddler, and every day, they ask a question that blows your mind.”
Gemma, who played Lisa Hunter in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, said Mia and Thiago’s personalities are starting to shine. However, she suggested there are still some things Gorka finds difficult when it comes to his daughter.
“Like, ‘Can I say this? Can I eat that? Can I do that? And you think, ‘Oh my gosh, look at you’. And then, in replacement of that toddler, you get a little sassy girl or a little cocky boy. Like Mia’s got the sass and she speaks to us about boys.
“And this, and, ‘I need some new crop tops’ and all this, things that make Gorka like shrink in his chair. And then soon, they’ll be a teenager, and they’ll be hormones’.”
In related news, Gorka recently aimed a cheeky dig at his wife-to-be over her former role as a glamour model. In the early 2000s, Gemma would appear in such “lads’ mags” as Zoo, Loaded and FHM.
As they answered questions from the internet, one query was: “What is Gemma Atkinson famous for?” In response, Gorka said: “Flash[ing] her tits.” He added: “Oh, she’s also an actress.”
He followed up by saying that she was “not famous first of all”.
Gemma said: “No, I work in the public eye. I’ve done every soap you can imagine, my darlings, I run a business, and I was FHM’s sexiest woman back in the day.”
Hilariously, she proceeded to look into the camera and declared: “Your dad’ll know” — and winked.
