Justin Herbert reveals exclusive details of proposal to Madison Beer as teammates react to engagement

Justin Herbert can stand in the pocket with a 300-pound pass rusher bearing down on him.

But proposing to girlfriend Madison Beer was terrifying.

Herbert was asked Wednesday whether or not he was more nervous getting down on one knee to propose to Beer or when he was 22 years old making his first NFL start. In typical fashion, the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback didn’t hesitate.

“The proposal for sure,” Herbert admitted with a grin.

The timing of the engagement, just a day before training camp was set to start was not a coincidence.

“I thought about it a lot,” he said of when he should do it.

Herbert’s engagement has been the unexpected topic during the Chargers’ first two days of training camp as teammates and coaches were just as happy to talk about Herbert’s off-the field victory as much as they were with his performance on the field.

Chargers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh said Herbert gathered everyone in the quarterback room to share the news of the proposal.

“We didn’t know until afterward,” Harbaugh said. “He told us… It’s awesome. I feel great for him.”

Harbaugh, who proposed to his wife Sarah just five months after they met, couldn’t help but reflect on the emotion of the moment.

“The little hairs on your arms start standing up,” he said. “The magical moment was when she said yes.”

Safety Derwin James Jr. had been waiting for the announcement.

“He told me a long time ago he was going to do it,” James said. “I was happy for him. It was fun to see.”

Chargers’ linebacker Daiyan Henley said he knew during the team’s 2025 season opener in Sao Paolo, Brazil against the Chiefs that Madison Beer was the one.

“I knew she was the one when Justin slid on the field against the Chiefs in Sao Paulo. It was her impact,” Henley told Kay Adams. “I already knew. We’re locker room guys. I made a joke one day, and he was like, ‘Bro, I’m bending the knee.’ I couldn’t wait. He was absolutely ready. Love was in the air, in his eyes, in his heart.”

Beer was spotted at Chargers’ training camp on Wednesday, still glowing from the engagement as she hugged Herbert as he came off the field.

Herbert even joked that the proposal required far more preparation than when he had to make his NFL debut because of an emergency injury to Tyrod Taylor back in 2020.

“My first start happened pretty quickly,” he said with a laugh.

Thankfully, Herbert had a little more time to prepare for his proposal than a few minutes.
