What to remember when we instantly grade the Yankees trade deadline

CHICAGO — Remember how you felt just minutes after last year’s trade deadline?

The general consensus seemed to be: Brian Cashman cooked.

After acquiring Ryan McMahon to shore up third base on July 25 and trading for utilityman Amed Rosario a day later, Cashman made a flurry of trades in the hours leading up to the deadline: Austin Slater the night before, and then on the day of, José Caballero, Camilo Doval, Jake Bird and David Bednar.

The three relievers in particular generated plenty of buzz as the Yankees tried to revamp their bullpen on the fly, and did so with a pair of All-Star closers. Of course, by the next day in Miami, they all had a hand in blowing a brutal game against the Marlins — a sign of things to come for two of the three.
