Stefon Diggs could be returning to where it all started.
Diggs, a free agent wide receiver who played college at the University of Maryland, is drawing interest from his hometown Commanders, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.
Fowler reported that at least five wide receiver-needy teams are interested in Diggs, and the Commanders intrigue him.
After former Washington receiver Deebo Samuel signed with the 49ers on Thursday, the Commanders need a second wideout opposite Terry McLaurin.
Diggs could fit that bill as the team continues to build around third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels, and he also publicly said he’d be willing to play for his hometown team.
“One-hundred percent,” Diggs told FOX 5 in a June interview. “That’s one of the first things I thought about like, damn, if I wanted to come back and play for my hometown team. I just had that same kind of energy when I chose to go to the University of Maryland. So I was just like, damn, it would be a thing. It definitely would be a thing if that kind of worked out. So, we’ll see, we’ll see. We’re not ruling it out.”

A Gaithersburg, Md., native, Diggs attended Maryland from 2012-14, recording 2,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in three years. He reached two bowl games.
Diggs was then selected by the Vikings in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, spending five seasons in Minnesota and tallying more than 4,500 receiving yards.
The 32-year-old sent Vikings fans into a frenzy with his game-winning touchdown in the 2018 Divisional Round, known as the “Minneapolis Miracle.”
He was traded to the Bills in 2020 and played four years with Josh Allen in Buffalo, reeling in 37 touchdowns and helping guide the team to four straight playoff appearances.
The veteran spent 2024 with the Texans and made a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2025 prior to legal issues surfacing.
After pleading not guilty on battery charges this offseason, Diggs didn’t face any punishment from the league, though his off-field actions may be a reason teams have been hesitant to sign him.
Diggs would be a valuable asset for a Commanders team whose current secondary receivers are rookie Antonio Williams and Luke McCaffrey.
