The recently released trailer of Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, has generated tremendous buzz for its visuals, scale and performances. While director Nitesh Tiwari has been widely praised for his vision, the film has now found itself at the centre of a fresh controversy. According to reports, Delhi-based Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has sought a special pre-release screening of the epic drama.
Concerns after Adipurush
Citing the controversy surrounding Adipurush, the Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has reportedly expressed concerns about the portrayal of Lord Ram in Ramayana. In a formal letter addressed to the filmmakers, the organisation has requested a preview screening for representatives of Hindu organisations and Ramlila committees before the film’s theatrical release.
According to reports, the body claimed it had received information suggesting that certain scenes in the film could potentially hurt religious sentiments. It has urged the makers to allow a screening to ensure the adaptation remains free from controversies similar to those that surrounded Adipurush, which drew criticism over its dialogues, costumes and visual treatment.
Reports further state that the organisation has warned of protests outside theatres if its request is ignored. The development comes just months ahead of Ramayana’s worldwide release during Diwali 2026.
Objections over Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal
Shri Ramlila Mahasangh president Arjun Kumar, along with members of several religious bodies, has also reportedly criticised Ranbir Kapoor’s appearance as Lord Ram in the trailer. According to him, the actor’s look lacks the traditional gravitas and aura associated with the revered character. Clarifying the organisation’s stand, Arjun Kumar reportedly said they were not seeking to “certify” the film.
“We will ask for certain scenes to be removed if any of them happens to hurt the religious sentiments of the people,” he said. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The epic is one of the most anticipated Indian releases of the year.
