A 50-year-old teacher was fatally stabbed by her husband with a pair of scissors in a plot inspired by a star-studded HBO series, according to cops in India.
Kamal Singh, 53, allegedly killed longtime spouse Komal at their home in Delhi over a property dispute Thursday, withdrew $7,300 from the bank, then hopped on a scooter to flee, the Hindustan Times reported.
Komal’s body was found lying in a pool of blood by the couple’s adult son later that night with “multiple stab injuries to her neck and back,” while “a blood-stained pair of scissors” were also recovered in a bag in the house, according to a senior police officer.
Security footage from the couple’s home captured screams coming from the house shortly before Kamal took off, said the officer in a report by the Times of India.
The husband was arrested Monday riding a scooter with the equivalent of $13,400 in cash as he prepared to board a train to escape, police said.
Kamal told cops his murder plot was inspired by the 2022 sensational HBO series “The Staircase,” starring Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Juliette Binoche and Patrick Schwarzenegger, reports said.
The TV series was based on the 2001 real-life death of Kathleen Peterson and the arrest of her husband, crime novelist Michael Peterson, for murder.
Kathleen was found dead at the bottom of the staircase at the couple’s home in Durham, NC, and Michael was quickly arrested for her murder.
He was sentenced to life in prison in 2003, but the conviction was overturned in 2011 because of “improprieties at the State Bureau of Investigation,” reported the News & Observer.
In 2017, Michael entered an Alford plea to voluntary manslaughter in his wife’s death and was released from custody with credit for the seven-plus years he had already spent behind bars.
Kamal allegedly told investigators that he believed by successfully disposing of his murder weapon, as Colin Firth’s character did in the series, he would be able to get away with the crime.
But for some reason, Kamal failed to dispose of the scissors and instead left them in a bag at the house, according to police.
“The team, however, said scientific investigation, CCTV analysis and technical surveillance dismantled the carefully planned escape strategy,” said the senior officer in the case.
When Kamal was arrested, he allegedly confessed to killing Komal in a property dispute and said he had bought the scissors he used for the murder just days earlier.
