Martin Kemp’s touching confession came as the father-and-son favourites are gearing up for the debut of their new three-part travelogue series about the Emerald Isle
Martin Kemp has shed light on the relationship he shares with his son, Roman, away from the cameras, as he admitted they don’t “get much time”. His confession came as the father-and-son duo sat down for an interview to coincide with their new three-part travelogue series, which explores Ireland.
Channel 4’s Martin and Roman’s Irish Road Trip sees the former Spandau Ballet bassist visit idyllic spots across Meath, County Cork, Dublin and the Causeway Coast — and the musician says he had a “lovely” time.
As enchanting as a trip to Ireland is, it seems there was another aspect of the trip that he valued. Martin revealed that it offered him an opportunity to spend some much-needed quality time with his son.
He told Heat Magazine: “I don’t think I learnt anything new about Ro. I know Roman inside out, so it was just lovely to have some time on our own.
“Usually when I see Ro, we are in a work or a family situation – we don’t really get much time when it’s just us one-on-one. This gave us time to laugh together, get on each other’s nerves and discover things with each other.
“It was a proper boys’ trip – we had a lot of fun.”
Roman said they wondered if they were producing a programme about the pair “taking the mick out of each other” or focusing on Ireland. Ultimately, he says, it was a “bit of both”.
Martin went on to say that he thought the concept of the show was “lovely”. He explained that spending time with Roman was “precious”, and that he loved “hanging out” with him.
The dad-of-two added that their close-knit dynamic, which fans enjoy watching on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox, is “no different” to what their bond is like off-camera. Roman concurred with earlier comments, saying his relationship with his dad is “genuine”.
BBC’s The One Show presenter Roman previously opened up about an “odd” consequence of being Martin’s son, admitting it’s “not normal”. He shared the insight while discussing his dad’s portrayal of EastEnders villain Steve Owen between 1998 and 2002.
In one infamous scene, Steve clashed with his ex-girlfriend, Saskia Duncan, on the opening night of his Walford club, E20. He struck her over the head with an ashtray in self-defence, and she later died.
On The Beth Mead Show, Roman was asked to name the character his dad hit on the soap. He answered correctly and said: “Well, no, because you’ve gone down roots that like, to be fair, because of the popular culture, in it, I only know that because other people were so on it.”
He went on: “Like, and I remember growing up and people being like, ‘Your dad’s a murderer’. I was like, ‘Well, he’s not’. But, you know…”, as he was quizzed on whether he had approached his dad about the storylines.
Roman continued: “Well, it was an odd thing, though, because I’ve seen my dad die in like five different ways, which isn’t a normal thing for anyone.”
He explained that the methods included “decapitation” and watching his head being “squished into a million pieces”. He jokingly added: “It’s not normal for a child to see that.”
