The only person standing between LeBron James and a fifth Olympic appearance may be LeBron James.
James has emphatically dismissed playing for Team USA at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, saying he would watch from Cabo. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, however, his refusal has not closed the door from the other side.
“If LeBron wants to play, he’ll get a roster spot,” Windhorst said on “The Hoop Collective.”
Accepting that invitation would require James to reverse his public position. It would also force Team USA to confront questions that do not have easy answers two years in advance.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon believes James may reconsider because he has committed to playing at least two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers.
“He’s gonna have his career end with the 2027-28 season, why not go out with the fifth Olympics?” MacMahon said. “He’s got a place in LA to stay. He doesn’t even have to stay in a hotel.”
The location and history would make a final appearance attractive. James spent eight seasons playing in Los Angeles and has never represented Team USA at an Olympics hosted in the United States.
His résumé makes the invitation understandable. James won Olympic MVP while leading the Americans to gold alongside Stephen Curry in Paris. He has competed in four Olympics, winning bronze in 2004 and gold in 2008, 2012 and 2024.
His age would make another appearance unprecedented.
James will be 43 years, six months and 14 days old when the Los Angeles Games open on July 14, 2028. If the current records still stand, he would become the oldest Olympic basketball player ever, surpassing Australian legend Lauren Jackson, who competed at 43 years and 79 days in Paris.
James would remain a relative youngster beside Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn, the oldest Olympian ever at 72 during the 1920 Games.
If James remains an effective NBA player through the 2027-28 season, finding room for him would require little explanation. If he retires before the Olympics, Windhorst’s declaration becomes more complicated.
Would Team USA still devote a roster spot to a 43-year-old James who had spent months away from NBA competition? Would the invitation remain unconditional, or does it presume he will still be capable of helping the Americans win?
A spot for James would not be purely ceremonial. It would also leave a younger star outside one of the deepest player pools in international basketball.
James is currently uninterested. Team USA’s apparent willingness to welcome him ensures that the decision remains his.
Whether that offer survives his potential retirement is the more intriguing question.
