Malaak Compton was born June 13, 1969, in Oakland, California. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts/Production Management from Howard University, and later completed graduate-level studies at Columbia University. 

She started in public relations and special events in the entertainment industry. Early roles included work at the Terrie Williams Agency, where she managed campaigns for clients such as Eddie Murphy and HBO. She also worked with media networks including VH1 and BET, and produced events and programs for television.

Compton shifted focus to nonprofit leadership and advocacy. In 1996, she founded StyleWorks, a nonprofit full-service salon that provides complimentary hair, styling, and professional-look services to women transitioning from welfare to the workforce. The organization was later described as offering attire and career-development resources to support economic mobility. She serves as its founder and executive director.

In 2008, Malaak Compton launched The Angelrock Project, an online platform promoting volunteerism, social responsibility and sustainable change. Through the Angelrock Project Foundation, she has supported youth education programs in underserved U.S. communities and in South Africa, along with initiatives addressing HIV orphan support, gender-based violence and food insecurity.

She also established Journey for Change, an international service program focused on volunteerism and cross-cultural engagement, including service trips to South Africa. Her nonprofit work extends to collaborations with organizations such as Safe Horizon, The Children’s Defense Fund, UNICEF, HOPE Worldwide, and others. She is also the author of If It Takes a Village, Build One, a guide to service and starting nonprofits.

She has been recognized with honors including a Community Leadership Award from the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network and a Mothers & Shakers Award in Redbook Magazine in 2002.

Chris Rock and Malaak Compton’s love story dates back to 1994 when they first met at the Essence Awards in New York City. Rock was working as a comedian and actor, and Compton was active as a Hollywood publicist. They dated for about two years and married on November 23, 1996, in a private ceremony. The couple settled in Alpine, New Jersey, and raised their family there. 

The duo slowly started expanding their family. Their first child, Lola Simone Rock, was born on June 28, 2002, in New York City. Around a year later, they had another daughter, Zahra Savannah Rock, on May 22, 2004. In 2008, they also welcomed a girl named Ntombi into their home. She was adopted by Malaak in South Africa.

Nearly 20 years after their wedding, the split was announced in December 2014. Rock’s publicist confirmed he had filed for divorce, calling it a personal matter and asking for privacy. Malaak also issued a statement, in which she requested privacy for their children. A parenting and custody agreement was entered in March 2015. The divorce was finalized on August 23, 2016.
