The summer can throw up a whole host of hair raising issues, from dullness to dryness. But help is at hand. Here, Tina Farey, Editorial Director at Rush Hair, tells how to combat the most common problems
Between sun, sea, and soaring temperatures, summer can be a field for hair health. We caught up with Tina Farey, Editorial Director at Rush Hair, who shared her top tips to protect and perfect your hair on holiday.
Don’t go green in the pool
Tina says: “A dip in the pool can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dull, damaged and dehydrated. The chemicals in the water can open the cuticle and allow a cocktail of chlorine and metals to seep into the hair, creating unwanted green or dull tones for those with blonde locks. To avoid this, I’d always recommend tying the hair up when going for a swim or rinsing your hair immediately after being in the pool – especially if you have just had your colour done!”
SPF for hair
Tina says: “SPF has become an essential this summer, but protecting your hair from the sun’s harmful rays is just as important! UV rays can penetrate the hair’s protective barrier, leaving your hair open to fading and breakage. My top tips for protecting your hair in the sun are simple – avoid the sun during peak hours and invest in good quality haircare that will nourish the hair (similar to using after sun but for your hair).
“I always recommend the Kérastase Soleil Sun Protection Collection, which has been designed to provide sublime hair protection under the sun, whilst being expertly formulated with UV filters, coconut water and vitamin E. A bonus – it also smells incredible!”
The 6 to 8 week rule
“Getting a trim every 6 – 8 weeks prevents any split ends from travelling further up the hair shaft, which weakens the hair’s overall structure and leads to more breakage. I’d recommend getting a trim at the beginning of summer to revitalise your hair before the rise in temperature and at the end of summer to remove any dead ends and refresh your look before autumn.
“However, this does depend on your hair type, length and how often you colour and style your hair. Even just an inch of the ends will completely transform the appearance of your hair – trust me!”
Bottoms up!
Tina says: “When it comes to budget hacks for nourishing your hair in the summer months, my top tip would be stay hydrated! If you’re dehydrated, not only will you suffer from the effects of the sun, but your hair will also feel the consequences! Drink plenty of water to ensure that your strands are hydrated from the inside and your scalp stays moisturised – hydrated hair is healthy hair!”
Stop colour fade
Tina says: “Colourists spend time perfecting your colour and if you don’t look after it, it won’t last as long! My top tips would be to wear a hat where possible to avoid your colour from fading and invest in high-quality products that are designed to stop your colour from fading.
“I love the Chroma Absolu Collection by Kérastase, which protects coloured hair from the inside out, as beautiful colour starts with healthy hair. I’d also recommend dialling down on the heat and letting your hair’s natural texture shine throughout the warmer months – with excessive use, heat styling tools can wreak havoc on colour!”
