India creates over 10.31 crore Farmer IDs under AgriStack

More than 10.31 crore Farmer IDs have been created across India under AgriStack as of 3 August 2026, while the Digital Crop Survey covered 648 districts and over 31.3 crore plots during the Rabi 2025-26 season, the government has said.

The implementation figures were shared by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 7 August.

AgriStack is being developed as a farmer-centric Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) aimed at facilitating delivery of agricultural schemes and services. Its foundational components include the Farmer Registry, geo-referenced village maps and the Crop Sown Registry, which are created and maintained by states and Union Territories.

Farmer IDs are generated by linking farmer details with digitised land records. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the registry is being integrated with farmer-facing schemes, services and digital platforms covering areas such as agricultural credit, crop insurance, weather advisories and minimum support price-based procurement.

The government also reported expansion of the Digital Crop Survey (DCS), which records crop-sowing information at the plot level. During Rabi 2025-26, the exercise covered more than 31.3 crore plots across 648 districts. Manipur has initiated the DCS process and is also participating in Farmer ID creation, according to the Ministry.

The State Farmer Registry operates through a federated architecture, with individual states retaining ownership of their respective data. The Ministry said AgriStack has been developed in accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, with farmer data collected on the basis of consent and access intended for authorised entities for specified purposes.

The Ministry also said farmers’ information is stored in encrypted form and that AgriStack’s security framework follows cybersecurity guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team.

Digital agriculture technologies are also being deployed for crop-yield estimation. Under the technology-based yield estimation initiative YES-TECH within the crop insurance framework, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been identified as one of the approaches for estimating yields for paddy, wheat and soybean.

Separately, the Digital General Crop Estimation System (DGCES) has been developed to support the generation of crop-yield data used for agricultural production estimates.

AgriStack forms part of the broader Digital Agriculture Mission approved by the Union Cabinet in 2024. The mission seeks to build digital agricultural infrastructure and use technologies including geospatial systems, artificial intelligence and data-driven tools to support agricultural services and decision-making.
