A man selling Pokémon cards at a card show was left gobsmacked when an A-list celebrity turned up in normal clothes – and was even more speechless by what they did next
Almost 30 years since the franchise began, Pokémon cards remain so popular that even A-List celebrities are getting involved. While the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), has long been popular with fans of the video games, TV shows, and card game players alike, interest has reached astronomical levels in recent years, with new stock selling out almost immediately and packs appearing online at high prices as scalpers and resellers aim to make a profit.
Beyond the card game itself, many people simply collect Pokémon cards, especially those with unique artwork, so there is also a huge market out there for people buying, selling, and trading in individual cards rather than packs. And as one collector on social media recently discovered, even celebrities are caught up in the hype.
Ola, who operates under the name Blest Collects, was selling some of his cards at Collect-A-Con in the US when two people approached his booth to ask about specific items in his collection. The man, who is from the UK, originally began telling the pair what the card they wanted was worth, but stopped in his tracks when he realised who he was talking to – actor Dylan Sprouse and his wife and model, Barbara Palvin.
Dylan, who rose to fame as a child actor with his twin brother Cole on the Disney series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, was interested in a card depicting the Pokémon Snorlax and Eevee, but was mildly unimpressed when Ola pointed out the card had a crease down the middle, so it wasn’t in pristine condition.
But former Victoria’s Secret model Barbara stuck around to shop at Ola’s table, taking interest in a Greninja card he was selling for $225 (£167). But rather than hand over the cash for the card, Barbara was interested in trading some of her own cards for it, so she ended up giving Ola several cards worth a total of $200 (£148), before paying the rest in cash.
Although Ola knew exactly who Dylan was, as he said in his video he “grew up” watching him on the Disney Channel, he was less familiar with Barbara, and left commenters horrified when he asked the stunning model what her name was.
One person said: “Asking Barbara for her name was lowkey crazy.” Another added: “And you didn’t know Mrs Barbara Sprouse?”
Commenters were also blown away by the fact that the couple even collect Pokémon cards, as they seemed to genuinely know what they were talking about rather than just collecting because they’re popular at the moment.
Someone wrote: “I love that there is a Victoria’s Secret model out there that collects and trades Pokémon cards with her husband.”
Someone else commented: “Okay, but can we talk about how normal they are? Like, yes, it’s THE Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Sprouse, but like dude, come on, the fact that they totally went in on Pokémon? Just wow, how cool.”
Dylan and Barbara are well-documented Pokémon fans. Earlier this year, the couple were involved in a scary incident which saw a man trespass onto their property in LA, and in July, Dylan told the Wildmen podcast that he had been opening Pokémon card packs with Barbara shortly before the incident occurred.
After Barbara went to bed, he stayed downstairs playing video games, and that’s when he heard someone at his front door. He said he initially thought it was his dad coming over for a visit, before realising it was too late at night for that, and then believed someone was “trying to steal” their Pokémon cards.
The authorities were called, and the intruder was arrested, but Dylan insisted he “didn’t press charges”. He claimed the man “got in the slammer” because he had previous arrest warrants, and he even wants to have the man on his podcast in the future to talk about the incident.
