The average circulation of Weekly Shonen Jump fell below 1 million copies for the first time since official figures began, marking another milestone in the long-term decline of Japan’s print manga magazine market.
According to the Japan Magazine Publishers Association, the Shueisha manga magazine recorded average circulation of 985,000 copies between April and June.
Weekly Shonen Jump was launched in 1968 and went on to produce numerous hit manga series. Its circulation reached a record 6.53 million copies in December 1994, the highest level in the magazine’s history.
Other major weekly manga magazines have also seen print circulation fall. Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine has average circulation of 281,000 copies, while Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday stands at 120,000.
At the same time, popular manga titles are increasingly being read through digital editions and other electronic platforms, with digital distribution becoming a major part of the manga market.
