The movie uses warp technology to explain his presence and to establish that travel between dimensions is now possible. That opens the door for ‘Fox’s’ team to return, for other Nintendo properties to cross over, and for the films to build a larger shared universe without starting from scratch each time.

The final post-credits scene points to another new lead. In the Gateway Galaxy, a ‘Ukiki’ steals from a ‘Whittle,’ only to be knocked out by a gloved hand. The ‘Whittle’ thanks “your highness,” revealing ‘Princess Daisy’ of Sarasaland in her yellow dress. ‘Daisy’ debuted in 1989’s Super Mario Land, and her appearance here, alongside a nod to ‘Wart,’ sets her up as a major player next time, alongside ‘Peach’ and ‘Rosalina’ as powerful rulers.

Across the film, the theme is connection. ‘Luigi’ believes ‘Bowser’ can change. ‘Mario’ risks himself to save ‘Bowser Jr.’ Tensions between ‘Yoshi’ and ‘Toad,’ and between ‘Mario’ and ‘Fox,’ resolve quickly. And the decision to rebuild the castle together underscores teamwork over individual heroics.
