He was a legendary Indian inventor, engineer, and industrial pioneer, born on March 23, 1893, in Kalangal near Coimbatore. GD Naidu became an immensely respected figure in India due to his relatable life story of humble beginnings, many failures, and eventual success. He was widely revered as the “Edison of India”. GD Naidu was initially not someone people would find extraordinary. He even dropped out of school as he preferred practical experience with machines over textbook knowledge. Instead of riding the motorcycle, Naidu allegedly dismantled its parts and reassembled them to understand how it worked. That curiosity later turned into a career move. In the 1920s, Naidu reportedly entered the transport business and operated a single motor coach between Pollachi and Palani. Later, it became Universal Motor Service (UMS) and was one of the country’s most efficient bus networks.

It is how he was able to manufacture India’s first indigenous electric motor in 1937 and lay the foundation for Coimbatore’s industrial revolution.
