Tributes from Lionel Messi’s fan clubs are pouring in as he lost his father, Jorge. A look at his social media handle reveals that his last post was a digital art of Lionel Messi celebrating his extraordinary career with an array of trophies that defined his football journey. Lionel Messi’s dad, Jorge’s last post showcased Messi sitting at ease on a wooden chair. He was wearing the Argentina national team jersey with football boots and white socks. Messi was seen relaxed in the frame, and it seemed as if he took a moment to reflect on his glorious career.

It is worth mentioning that Jorge made his last social media post in 2024. It was liked by his daughter-in-law, Antonela Roccuzzo. Jorge did not give any caption to the post, but Messi’s hand was seen resting on a silver trophy. It is positioned right in front of him, and there is also the FIFA World Cup trophy. Key moments from Messi’s football career back in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2023 are reflected in the array of trophies he won during these years.

The wooden shelves stacked with trophies depicted Messi’s professional achievements as a footballer. It was the Rosario-based Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys that made the announcement of Lionel Messi’s dad, Jorge’s, death. The statement mentioned that Jorge was undergoing treatment for an unspecified illness. A part of the statement also read:

“The pillar and the person who, with vision, rigor and affection, supported the career of the best player of all time, alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.”

Earlier, Lionel Messi’s family had confirmed that Jorge Messi, 68, was undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed illness and was also recovering. He was under observation, and the family had squashed false reports of his death which previously circulated in Argentina. The family had urged responsibility, prudence and humanity, and had stressed that health and peace of mind should not be subject to speculation.

The clarification came when Messi acknowledged that he was going through a difficult situation in his personal life. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup post Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria, Messi cried a river. On one end, he was happy to win his team’s opening match, but then Messi had explained that he was going through a tough situation. In the words of Messi:

“I went through some difficult, complicated days. I am grateful to the delegation, to all my teammates, because they were always by my side wishing me strength so that I would be ok.”

Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge was a chemical technician who had also worked as a steelworker. He had played soccer as a midfielder but had to abandon it. This is because he had to complete his mandatory military service back in Argentina. Jorge had played an important role in Messi’s life. He was his agent and used to also manage his business affairs. Jorge used to travel with Messi to Barcelona back in the early 2000s.

Rest in peace, Jorge Messi.
