Cristiano Ronaldo was rumoured to be marrying Georgina Rodriguez at Funchal Cathedral in Madeira, Portugal, this weekend – but fans actually mobbed another couple’s nuptials
Cristiano Ronaldo has shared his reaction after fans mobbed a couple on their wedding day, mistakenly believing they were the Portuguese footballer and his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez.
CR7, who plays as a forward for and captains the Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr and the Portugal national team, was rumoured to be marrying his partner of 10 years at Funchal Cathedral in his hometown of Madeira this weekend. The famous couple, who have been together since meeting at a Madrid Gucci store in 2016, officially announced their engagement in August 2025.
The pair haven’t shared any details of their nuptials so far, but it was claimed that they would tie the knot at Funchal Cathedral before celebrating with their loved ones at five-star Savoy Palace hotel in Funchal this weekend. However, the rumours were debunked after fans accidentally mobbed a local couple’s wedding.
Over 2,000 football fans and onlookers swarmed the church steps in hopes of catching a glimpse of the superstar couple today. When a luxury grey Rolls-Royce arrived, the crowd mobbed the vehicle assuming the woman inside was Georgina.
But the mix-up was soon revealed as the bride was not Georgina, but it turned out to be a local woman, Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira, marrying her partner Fabio Ramos. The couple, who live in France, returned to their homeland to get married. They have no connection to Cristiano and Georgina.
This afternoon, local newspaper Jornal da Madeira posted footage of large crowds – including people wearing Ronaldo t-shirts – gathering outside the church. The newspaper wrote in the caption that many people gathered, thinking they would attend the footballer’s wedding.
Cristiano, 41, couldn’t help but react to the footage, commenting on the Instagram post with five laughing emojis. In a follow-up post, the newspaper wrote that Cristiano “was not indifferent” as he showed he was aware of the speculation surrounding his wedding.
According to reports, wedding guests attending Fabio and Fatima’s ceremony had to fight their way through the crowd as fans were convinced Cristiano was the groom. One of the guests said: “Fabio is not Cristiano Ronaldo. This is all crazy. We did not expect anything like this. I don’t think he is going to forget his wedding.”
Father Marcos Gonçalves, the parish priest of the cathedral, said: “I can tell you that they are nothing to do with Cristiano Ronaldo. This is the only wedding taking place here today.” The priest added he didn’t believe Cristiano had booked the venue for a wedding any time soon.
After the couple got married, Funchal Cathedral shared a photo of the newlyweds on Facebook, writing: “We never saw anything like this here at the cathedral. It was very complicated for the bride to enter the church to get married.
“Congratulations to the couple Nicole and Fabio. After a lot of confusion on the street with so many journalists and tourists, we finally managed to close the church and celebrate.”
