After a long, long wait, Roger Craig finally received his much-deserved induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On Saturday, the former San Francisco 49ers running back took his place among the game’s all-time greats after a 28-year wait to become eligible.
As Craig took the stands as a senior candidate, his emotional acceptance speech had a deeply personal revelation: he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Roger Craig reveals vascular dementia diagnosis
Craig made the announcement during a pre-recorded speech played at the Hall of Fame ceremony on August 8, 2026. Towards the end of his speech, he opened up on his heartbreaking diagnosis, saying that doctors believe the condition may be at least partially related to the multiple concussions he suffered during his 11-year NFL career.

“My doctors believe may be related, at least in part, to the concussions I experienced during my career,” he began. At first, Craig said, the symptoms were easy to dismiss as ordinary signs of aging. Eventually, however, his family began noticing changes, prompting him to seek medical advice. The former running back also acknowledged the complicated relationship he now has with the sport that gave him so much. He continued:
“Two things can be true: Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I could imagine… I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, a husband, a teammate, a friend and someone who loves this game.”
Craig says his family has been his biggest source of support throughout this journey, and now more than ever, he appreciates having them in his life. Here’s everything you need to know about the NFL legend’s devoted wife, Vernessia Craig, and their five children.
Who is Roger Craig’s wife, Vernessia Craig?
Craig has often credited his extraordinary NFL career to his longtime wife, Vernessia Craig. The couple married on May 7, 1983, the same year Craig entered the NFL after the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the second round of the draft. They have now been married for more than four decades.

Not much is known about Vernessia’s personal or professional life, as she has largely stayed out of the spotlight, despite being married to one of the most influential running backs of his generation. Their relationship has spanned Craig’s rise with the 49ers, three Super Bowl victories, his retirement from football, and his eventual journey to Canton.
The family has also been part of some of Craig’s biggest career celebrations. In 1989, Vernessia joined her husband during the 49ers’ championship celebration in San Francisco after their Super Bowl victory. Craig made sure to acknowledge her during his Hall of Fame speech, saying the honor belonged not only to his parents but also to “my wife, Vernessia, my children, and grandchildren.”

Craig and Vernessia are parents to five children: Damesha, Rometra, Rogdrick, Alexander, and Nia-Jai. They also have five grandchildren. The family has generally maintained a relatively private life, but several of Craig’s children have followed athletic or professional paths of their own.
The couple’s eldest, Damesha Craig, pursued athletics and earned a scholarship to UCLA before eventually moving into coaching and professional life coaching. She has also built her own coaching practice, LEVELD Coaching, which focuses on personal development.
Their second-born, Rometra Craig, is perhaps the most accomplished athlete among her siblings. As a youngster, she excelled in taekwondo and even became a nationally ranked competitor before turning her attention to basketball. She later played college basketball and continued her connection to athletics through sports education. Rometra has also worked as an athletic director in school athletics.
The couple’s first son, Rogdrick Craig, found his passion in basketball and competed at the collegiate level. He played at Texas Tech after beginning his college career at San Jose City College. He was also present alongside his father during Craig’s emotional Hall of Fame weekend in Canton.
Alexander Craig, also known as Alex, was another member of the family to pursue competitive athletics. He competed in track and field at the collegiate level, specializing in sprinting. Nia-Jai Craig, the youngest of Craig’s children, also grew up in an intensely athletic household and played competitive tennis.
Craig has previously spoken about how seriously he approached fitness and discipline as a father. His legendary work ethic on the football field extended into his family life, with his children exposed to demanding training from a young age.

In 1985, Craig became the first player in NFL history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. He ultimately won three Super Bowls with San Francisco and was selected to four Pro Bowls. He finished his career with 8,189 rushing yards, 4,911 receiving yards, and 73 total touchdowns.
After a legendary career, Craig’s Hall of Fame induction was particularly emotional because he had waited 28 years after becoming eligible before finally receiving his place in Canton. Yet even amid the celebration, Craig chose to focus on something bigger than football records. In his words:
“When I look at my family, that’s what I’m most proud of. The championships were special. The records were special. But they are my greatest blessing.”
For Craig, his Hall of Fame legacy is also about his wife, children, and loved ones who stood beside him through every chapter.
