Filmmaker Shakeel Noorani Arrested Over Aspiring Actress Rape and Blackmail Allegations

Filmmaker Shakeel Noorani has been arrested by the Mumbai Police following a complaint by a 33-year-old actress, who has accused him of rape, sexual assault, blackmail and causing her miscarriage. The 73-year-old filmmaker was arrested from his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar on Saturday, around 40 days after the case was registered.

Noorani is known for directing and producing films including Bade Dil Wala (1999) and Joru Ka Ghulam (2000).

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that Noorani sexually assaulted her repeatedly over a period of four years. She claimed that he called her to his residence in Malvani on the pretext of discussing work, spiked her drink and sexually assaulted her.

The woman further alleged that when she regained consciousness, Noorani showed her an intimate video on his phone and threatened to circulate it if she approached the police or informed her family. She claimed that he subsequently used the video to blackmail and threaten her and repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

She also alleged that Noorani gave her contraceptive pills following the assaults and poisoned her, which she claimed ultimately led to a miscarriage. Noorani’s lawyer has denied the allegations against him.

The complaint was filed around 40 days before Noorani’s arrest. Following the registration of the case, he allegedly went into hiding. Police eventually traced him to his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar, in Maharashtra’s Satara district, and brought him to Mumbai before placing him under arrest.

Noorani has been booked under Sections 64, 123, 88 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was produced before a local court and has been remanded to police custody until August 12.
