A star of BBC’s The Repair Shop has issued an apology to fans, explaining that he’d picked up an injury and likely needs to “give it a rest”. Metalwork expert Dominic Chinea has been busy doing some restoration work on an old Land Rover Series 1 in his Cornish workshop, but has, of late, faced difficulties with the vehicle’s rear tub.
In July, he admitted to being left “well and truly stumped” by the tub’s corners. Dominic said he was “struggling” and there were three or four layers of material that were “all overlapping and spot-welded together”.
He explained that they were “corroded and rotten and need repairs”, before apologising for the lack of progress. In a recent update for his YouTube channel, Dom was back working on the vehicle.
Progress had been made since, with the expert craftsman seen drilling holes in the back panels and installing lights. Later in the video, he set to work restoring the Land Rover’s windscreen frame.
After spending a “huge amount of time” stripping the piece back, he fitted the frame to the car to get an idea of how it would look once finished — a “morale boost”, as he put it. But there’s still plenty of work to be done.
It seems it will have to wait, though, Dominic said: “Unfortunately, I am rapidly running out of time. I’m going to rub down and do a second coat on the rear tub now, whilst the sun is shining.
“But I can’t do anything else on this window frame until my plan comes into action, which is going to be next week.
“And I’ve also cut my finger quite badly, which means it’s probably telling me I should give it a rest and go inside and do some editing. So, I’m going to sign off the video here. Sorry it’s a short one, but at least it’s a bit of an update.”
Previously, Dominic revealed how he’d been cultivating wildflowers and constructing a pond on his grounds, but this project had hit a snag, too.
He explained that when he returned home after time away, he discovered that the pond was “completely empty”.
He said: “A pond update, which unfortunately, as you may well have guessed, is not good news. It’s emptied itself. The pond is completely empty. The first try was just filling it with the soil that’s here.
“That emptied very quickly. I’ve put a layer of puddling clay on the bottom. Sprinkled that around, filled it, and it did last for a good few days, but then it’s drained away. “
