Actress Anupama Parameswaran has spoken about enduring a toxic relationship for two years. Appearing on I AM with Dhanya Varma, the multilingual actress, who shot to fame with Premam (Malayalam) in 2015, described the unpredictable and extreme personality shifts she experienced in a past relationship, which she characterised as narcissistic abuse that lasted for about two years.

Anupama recounts extreme emotions
She compared her former partner’s behaviour to the multiple-personality character from Anniyan, the Chiyaan Vikram-starrer of the same name. She said her partner would be extremely loving and romantic, like the character Remo, one day, making her feel incredibly lucky and as though the relationship was almost unreal and dream-like. The next day, however, he would completely flip into a different extreme mode. He would become cold, aggressive or hostile, to the point of emotional cruelty or indifference even in severe situations. Then he could switch again to apologising, begging, crying and love-bombing, restarting the cycle.
Ever since she made a cryptic post on Instagram in July, there had been speculation about her breakup. “Oooops!!!!!! Sorry for the photo dump. Turns out, when you don’t have to wait for approvals, a song selection, or someone else’s caption… posting becomes a lot more fun,” the Karthikeya 2 actress wrote.
Anupama has now clarified that her social media post wasn’t an overnight impulse. It came after two years of emotional turmoil, during which she took time to step back, heal and rebuild before making the post. “There was a journey of a girl who identified something really big about herself and life, and who took her time to heal and voice something so important,” she stated.

Healing and reclaiming her voice
Another of Anupama’s recent posts read: “Sometimes, you have to let go of the dead ends to finally find your peace. And today, peace found me. From today, I choose my voice. I choose my life. No more permissions. No more fear.”
The actress also discussed how many people can become trapped in narcissistic relationships without even realising what they are experiencing, a phenomenon often associated with trauma bonding. She recalled shivering after first watching a video by actress Madonna Sebastian about narcissistic abuse, which helped her recognise her own situation.
