Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday congratulated top-ranked Indian recurve archer Dhiraj Bommadevara for scripting history as the first Indian male archer to win an individual gold at the Archery World Cup Final. He edged out Japan’s Junya Nakanishi in a thrilling shoot-off to claim the title.
Naidu said Bommadevara had made history, rising from the archery grounds of Vijayawada to the global podium in Mexico.
“Heartiest congratulations to Bommadevara on becoming the first Indian male archer to win individual gold at the Archery World Cup Final,” Naidu said in a post on X.
He said Andhra Pradesh and the nation were beaming with pride as Bommadevara ended India’s 16-year wait for an individual men’s gold at the event with a perfect 10 in the final shoot-off, calling him an inspiration to the state’s young sporting talent.
“Dhiraj, you have shown the world what relentless grit, focus and determination can achieve. You are an inspiration to the immense talent across our state. Wishing you immense success. Keep hitting the bullseye!” Naidu said.
After returning empty-handed from the 2023 and 2024 editions, the 25-year-old World No. 10 Army man produced a dominant run this time, powering through the quarterfinals and semifinals before overcoming World No. 20 Nakanishi 6-5 (28-28, 28-29, 29-28, 28-30, 28-27) in a hard-fought five-setter. After a 5-5 tie, Bommadevara prevailed 10-9 in the shoot-off.
