Hyderabad: Union minister G. Kishan Reddy has accused the Congress and earlier BRS governments of deliberately suppressing the history of Telangana Liberation Day (Sept. 17) to appease AIMIM and protect their vote banks, while also charging that the state’s resources and valuable government land are being handed over to private parties under the present dispensation.
He was speaking after flagging off a bike rally from Sri Bhagyalaxmi Mandir at Charminar to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue near the Assembly, organised by BJP Mahila Morcha activists, and riding a motorcycle himself. Kishan Reddy alleged that the BRS and the Congress avoided official celebrations of Hyderabad Liberation Day out of fear of AIMIM. He pointed out that Maharashtra and Karnataka hold grand official functions in the Marathwada and Hyderabad‑Karnataka regions.
He said the Centre had for several years been officially organising Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations at the Secunderabad Parade Ground to honour the martyrs and the aspirations of Telangana’s four crore people. This year’s function will have Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan as chief guest. Union culture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, Union ministers, elected representatives and senior officials are also expected to attend.
Reddy said the celebration was not a political event but a matter of self‑respect for Telangana’s people and a homage to those who laid down their lives against Nizam rule. The Sept. 17 morning event at the Parade Ground will feature a tri‑services military parade and Telangana cultural performances, with a special dance by 1,000 artistes. He called on people to attend in large numbers and fulfil their duty of remembering the sacrifices made. Riding a motorcycle alongside participants in the rally, Reddy later offered floral tributes at the statue of Sardar Patel.
At the launch of a book, ‘September 17 – Telangana Liberation Day’, authored by Osmania University’s Prof. G. Laxman, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr K. Laxman criticised AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi for opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He said the UCC was in line with the vision of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, ensuring equal rights and duties for all citizens.
At a separate event, former Governors Bandaru Dattatreya and Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender, BJP spokesperson P.L. Srinivas and others held a round table conference, appealing to the state government to officially declare Sept. 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day and include the history of Operation Polo in school textbooks.
