Mangaluru:After a packed day of programs in Mangaluru and Hebri, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made time for a personal visit with political significance, calling on 89-year-old veteran Congress leader and former Union minister B Janardhan Poojary at his residence in Bantwal on Friday night.
After wrapping up his programmes in Mangaluru, Shivakumar travelled to Hebri in Udupi district for a meeting on Kasturirangan Report before returning to Mangaluru in the evening. He then drove to Bantwal, around 20 km from Mangaluru, reaching Poojary’s residence at around 9 pm.
Poojary and his family members welcomed the Chief Minister, who spent some time with the veteran leader and held discussions with him. Poojary felicitated Shivakumar with a shawl and appeared pleased with the Chief Minister’s visit.
Shivakumar, who was accompanied by Congress leaders, had light refreshments at the house before leaving for Mangaluru.
Poojary, a veteran of the Congress, had been very closely associated with the party’s central leadership, including former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He served as Union minister, AICC general secretary, KPCC president and Rajya Sabha member. He was considered a right-hand man of Indira as well as Rajiv.
