Hyderabad: Doctors at Gandhi Hospital managed the pregnancy and delivery of a 22-year-old woman with a rare and severe heart condition. She delivered a healthy baby boy at 37 weeks despite having Eisenmenger syndrome and severe pulmonary hypertension.
According to a hospital statement, the patient was diagnosed with a serious cardiac ailment, described as ‘large perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD), measuring 1.9 cm, with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension, severe tricuspid regurgitation and mitral regurgitation’. She was diagnosed with the condition at 12 weeks of pregnancy and was started on treatment at Gandhi Hospital.
She subsequently underwent regular antenatal check-ups under Unit 2. At term, she was admitted and underwent an elective Caesarean section on September 3 at 11.19 am, following a cardiac management protocol. The baby boy weighed 2.3 kg at birth. Following delivery, the mother was kept under intensive care and underwent regular cardiac monitoring. She was discharged on the 15th post-operative day in stable condition, along with her healthy baby.
The doctors said Eisenmenger syndrome, a severe form of pulmonary hypertension caused by certain congenital heart defects, makes pregnancy particularly high-risk. International guidelines classify Eisenmenger syndrome among conditions associated with extremely high maternal risk and recommend specialist, multidisciplinary care.
Dr Janaki, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and her team managed the patient throughout the pregnancy and delivery. The hospital said Eisenmenger syndrome is extremely uncommon among pregnant women, with an incidence cited at around two in one lakh pregnancies.
