Visakhapatnam: Cybercrime police arrested a 49-year-old woman for allegedly trying to extort money from a 26-year-old woman by threatening to circulate her private photographs, videos and audio files on social media.

The accused, Chandana Geetha Prasanna of Seethammadhara, allegedly operated with her husband Sivanarayana and associates Naresh, Uday and Ramana Murthy to blackmail people by threatening to circulate their personal photographs and videos unless they paid money, police said.

Based on a complaint from the victim, cybercrime police, led by inspector K. Bhavani Prasad Rao, registered a case against Geetha Prasanna under sections relating to extortion, criminal intimidation and criminal defamation, besides relevant provisions of the IT Act.

Police arrested her and produced her before a court on Saturday. She was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Police said Geetha Prasanna had been accused in eight earlier cases registered at various police stations in Visakhapatnam city.

“She played high drama to evade arrest. She threatened to commit suicide and jump from the building. But we could take her into custody,” the inspector said.

Police said the investigation was under way to establish the exact role of her associates in the case.
