Fans hoping to wish Howie Rose farewell at Citi Field on Sunday will have to wait till next year.
The Mets announced Sunday morning that the ceremony honoring the longtime voice of the club, who is retiring after this season, has been postponed until Opening Weekend 2027 due to the rainy weather. The Mets-Phillies game, which is scheduled for 1:10 p.m., is still set to be played.
The Mets open next season on the road and play their first home series April 2-4 against the Giants.
The first 15,000 fans who show up on Sunday will still get a “Put it in the books” notebook and scorecard, the Mets said.
“Howie Rose is more than a broadcaster to this organization. He is a part of the fabric of the New York Mets. Out of respect for everything he has meant to our fans, we have decided to postpone the ceremony and instead honor him during Opening Weekend 2027,” Mets president of business operations Lew Sherr said in a statement. “While we are disappointed that inclement weather will prevent us from having our planned ceremony, we want to make sure that we properly celebrate Howie for all that he has done for the Mets.”
Ticket-holders for Sunday’s game “will receive a digital ticket voucher for a ticket comparable in price and location to a 2027 April-May home game at Citi Field,” the Mets said. That excludes Opening Day and the Subway Series.
Knowing that rain threatened the Mets’ home finale, Rose — who was the emcee for Carlos Beltran’s number retirement ceremony on Saturday — treated Saturday’s game as if he’d be signing off for the final time; Rose has not called road games this season.
“Any one of you could sit where I’m sitting here in this booth because we have very similar backgrounds,” Rose said. “I grew up in the upper deck at Shea Stadium, many of you sit in the upper deck here or sat somewhere here or at Shea Stadium. But the point is that I feel like I know you. And more importantly, I feel like you know me.”
He capped it off with, “just know that I love you all.”
