A BBC Radio 2 star was pulled off air after just 50 minutes of her show when she was struck by illness that made it too hard to present, leaving her co-host to go solo
BBC Radio 2 star Reverend Kate Bottley was struck by illness, forcing her to leave her show mid-presentation. The former Gogglebox star co-hosts Good Morning Sunday on the channel with Jason Mohammad, and he had to present the rest of the show solo.
Kate had only been on air for 50 minutes of her 175-minute show when she had to leave. Her departure was announced by Jason, who said: “Now, if you’re just joining us, you will know the Reverend K. Bottley usually starts talking at this point of the show.
“But unfortunately, if you’ve been listening since six, you will know that she’s been a little poorly. So what we’ve done is we have sent her home, so she’s gone home to get some rest.”
He added that before she left, she gave him a message for listeners: “She wanted to say a big thank you for all the love and lovely, gorgeous messages that you’ve been sending. So thank you so much. So she’s gone home to rest and recover and recuperate, because, God bless her, her voice was really struggling this morning.”
Jason added his own message of love to Kate, saying he and the Radio 2 team were “sending strength and power across the radio airwaves” and hoped she would get well soon.
Kate took to Instagram with her own update after the show, confirming that she was dealing with the flu and needed to rest up at home. She joked that she was “52 and [had] freshers flu”, referencing the rise in flu cases amongst new university students during Freshers Week.
She continued: “Shout out to my @bbcradio2 family for sending me home this morning. After 50 minutes on air it became apparent I was no use to anyone.
“So many lovely messages from our lovely listeners. The always splendid @mrjasonmohammad and wonderful @jennysmithuk for being THE BEST humans. I’m now on the sofa with the dog, some hot Vimto, wearing my comfies.”
Kate is also a Church of England vicar and had to pull out of performing two christenings due to her ill health as well. “Apologies too to the families of the two babies I should have been Christening today,” she wrote. “You would not thank me for giving this to your precious children. See you on the other side.”
Kate has been well-known to the public since she and her husband were on Gogglebox from 2014 to 2016. Since February 2018, she has been on both BBC Radio 2, with Good Morning Sunday, and BBC Radio 4 with Prayer for the Day.
She had amassed a big following on social media in that time, many of whom sent her messages of love and support, saying they hoped she felt better soon.
