Chennai:IIT Madras has partnered with Spark Minda Foundation (SMF) to take an indigenous prosthetic knee developed by its researchers from the laboratory to wider use, potentially improving mobility for people with limb loss, particularly on uneven terrain.
The IIT Madras Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and SMF, the CSR arm of automotive components major Spark Minda, have signed a non-exclusive technology licensing agreement for the transfer of ‘Kadam’, an innovative prosthetic knee developed at IIT Madras.
The agreement brings together IIT-M’s research and engineering expertise in assistive and rehabilitation technologies with SMF’s product development, manufacturing and outreach capabilities. The partnership is aimed at scaling up the technology and making the prosthetic solution accessible to a larger number of users.
‘Kadam’ was developed under the leadership of Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head of the National Centre for Assistive Health Technologies (NCAHT) and TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Srinivasan said the institute was happy to collaborate with partners who believed that persons with disabilities should have access to technologies that enable greater independence.
The partnership is part of SMF’s broader initiative to develop indigenous prosthetic solutions and achieve 50,000 prosthetic limb fitments by 2030.

SMF Chairperson Sarika Minda said the licensing agreement was a step towards creating an ecosystem where academic innovation, industry capabilities and social responsibility could converge to develop solutions for a more inclusive society.
