Ed Sheeran was parodied in the latest episode of Saturday Night Live following his controversy regarding Palestine. In recent days, the singer, 35, saw all of his support acts for his current tour drop out of the remaining dates after Macklemore, real name Benjamin Haggerty, was removed from the line-up over comments he made about Gaza.
The famed US sketch show, which has been an institution in the US for decades but only made its debut in the UK towards the end of last year, returned over the weekend and the Shape of You singer was the target of jokes made by the programme’s latest episode.
As part of the skit, the late Princess Diana featured as an AI assistant for King Charles following the claims the bombshell claims that he allegedly made about her that emerged earlier this week. A tech assistant in the scene tells King Chalres: “This is the Deeply Intelligent Autonomous Neurokinetic Android, or for short, D.I.A.N.A,” just before Jack Shep appears as Diana in the famous revenge dress.
In the sketch, Diana begins: “Hello Charles. Would you like help with a five-step business plan or perhaps I can help you find the nearest petrol station?” but Charles then fails to recognise his late ex-wife as he says: “Hold on a second. It’s that woman from the Nineties . As I allegedly said, she was soon forgotten.”
A war between AI robots and humans then breaks out before Ed, played by SNL cast member Annabel Marlow, turns up where he tells the king: “The thing is, your Majesty, I don’t like to take sides. I don’t want to alienate any of my fans – humans or robots.
“A lot of my tickets are bought my scalping bots. Sometimes when it comes to conflicts, the bravest thing you can do is to say nothing at all. I’m talking ‘bout both sides are equally right. No matter the conflict, whatever the fight. Girl listen now, black, white, I only see grey.”
Fans of the sketch programme were quick to react to the skit, with one claiming that it was the “the best writing so far in SNL,” whilst another said that it was “definitely one of their best” since the show began. Just hours after the programme aired, Ed took to the stage for his show at Lincoln Financial Field in Pennsylvania.
Some of the other acts who have dropped out of Ed’s tour include Irish singer Aaron Rowe, Grammy award-winning musician Finneas, who is Billie Eilish’s brother, and Danish singer Lukas Graham.
Macklemore posted on Instagram claiming Sheeran and his team had “made the decision to remove” him from the Loop Tour.
In a response on the social media platform on Tuesday, Ed said his departure from the tour was the promoter’s decision and not his.
He said “upcoming tour dates had communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting”, and added Robert Kraft, owner of the Gillette Stadium, where he was due to play, was among them.
Ed added: “I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care.
“Nor does it mean I don’t support causes in my own personal way.” The singer said he was “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine”, and added he respected Macklemore “as an artist”.
